Wrote this as homework a couple weeks ago. Thought I'd share:
Savansana allows for the mind and body to focus on breathing at the end of yoga practice, and allows for the beginning of a more meditative yoga practice. It allows for both the mind and body to relax and integrates the physical, spiritual and philosophical aspects of a person. Savasana isn’t about doing the pose but is instead about being. The pose disciplines the mind through the body to teach it how to be quiet and peaceful.
Savanasa decreases: heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, muscle tension, and metabolic rate. Consistent practice of Savasana can decrease anxiety, improve focus, heighten energy levels, and improve self-confidence. The pose should also increase awareness of breathing and allow for a deeper and slower breath. Savasana removes stress and pressure in the spine by allowing the pelvis to open, spreading the discs of the back. Different variations of the posture with props can allow for more specific relaxing of muscles, however overall Savasana should provide for the softening of all muscles and ultimately of the mind.
