Class Observation (No. 1)

As part of the 50-hour beginner training, I have to observe three different levels of classes: Gentle, Level 1, Level 1-2 or 2. While I've taken classes and subbed a handful of times, I'd never just observed a class until last night.

I wasn't sure what to expect by sitting behind the students and watching when I first went in to observe the advanced class. There were five students in the 90 minute class and I recognized four of them as regulars. I think the fifth student was newer because they seemed to struggle through a lot of the poses, but I've had nights like that too so I wasn't sure.

The teacher I observed is actually one of the teachers for my teacher training so watching her interact was pretty awesome since she corrects me weekly. She was really helpful and her ability to get reactions out of verbal reminders (chest open, plant your feet) was really great to see. You don't always have to do a light touch or a firmer adjustment to get a student where they need to be. I also thought it was interesting that she didn't correct things all the time but instead let the student work themself into the pose.

Class started sitting with some forward folds, went into inversions and hip openers, then into standing poses, some sun salutations, foward folds, seated twist, another forward fold before the student's pick of inversion (and counter pose). After that it was savasana. Maybe I'll post the full sequence after I transcribe my notes.
