I worked out with a friend of mine last night. Ran almost two miles and lifted some weights. Somewhere in between increasing the incline to 3.5 and taking a faster pace I realized that I'm really not as out of shape as I think I am. I am out of shape for me, but when I can get off the couch and run two miles I really shouldn't be complaining. Because even when I've fallen off of the work-out/running/whatever wagon, I still have managed to keep a decent level of fitness and health. Usually. Well at least this time.
My good friend C is completely frustrated though, and I get it. After losing her job, she's had a hard time getting things back together. While we all think that if we had unlimited time we'd work out more, the truth is that finding the motivation to work out when you're not motivated to do anything is really hard. Working out with her last night reminded me of that. It's all about trying to find ways to motivate yourself. Whether it's having a workout buddy or having a goal.
Right now I just miss double digits runs and am trying to pick out a fall marathon. Goals as motivation indeed.
