That number has haunted me since my failed attempt at finishing my training for one in the fall of 2007. In 2007 I was shooting for a fall marathon and was training to complete a half marathon in July in San Francisco. About a month before the half marathon, I ended up with a back injury helping my boyfriend at the time move.
Instead of taking the time off and resigning myself to a vacation in San Francisco, I decided to run the 13.1 miles. It was a cold, rainy morning in July and I had left my prescribed Vicodin and muscle relaxers in the hotel room. Around mile 9 I realized what a mistake leaving those behind was.
It was a painful 13.1 miles, and I didn't run for a year after. I did finish though.
Fast forward to 2009 and I'm trying to run again, but the back pain returns. I can't actually run without pain and I start going back to bikram yoga. Hoping to get rid of the pain, yoga slowly started to help. It wasn't until I was in a bikram class in 2010 that in a spinal twist I felt the muscle pull finally release. I had been going consistently for about 3 months at that point. Now I try to do yoga a few days a week, either at home or at a studio to keep my back in line.
All of this is to say that I'm looking at finally realizing that 26.2 goal this fall. I pushed to 3 miles yesterday and felt decent for the first time in a long time. So I'm going to sign up for a 10k in a few weeks. Pushing my 3 up to 6.2 miles then slowly working on that last 20 for the fall.
Perhaps this will actually be the year I knock this off the life list.
